May 2: The I J Doda Foundation will organise a Climate Media Leadership Programme
(CMLP) on May 6 at Chandigarh University to strengthen evidence-based climate reporting.
The initiative is being held under the Environment Education Programme (EEP),
supported by the Ministry of Environment,
Forest and Climate Change and coordinated by the Punjab State Council for Science and Technology.
The one-day programme targets journalism and mass communication students, faculty,
and early-career media professionals, focusing on accuracy, data interpretation, and responsible storytelling in climate coverage.
The event assumes significance amid mounting environmental stress in Punjab.
According to official assessments, over 75% of groundwater blocks in the
state are over-exploited, with extraction far exceeding recharge rates.
Punjab also witnesses consistently high PM2.5 levels,
often breaching national air quality standards during peak seasons,
while several river stretches remain polluted, impacting public health and agriculture.
The programme is being hosted at Chandigarh University,
under the guidance of Satnam Singh Sandhu, Member of Parliament (Rajya Sabha) and Chancellor.
Key resource persons include Dharminder Sharma, PCCF & Head of Forest Force, Punjab , Jonita Doda,
Environmentalist & President of the Foundation and Vijay Brar, Sr. Journalist, Dr.Anoop Verma HoD Tiet along with other experts.
Jonita Doda said the manner in which environmental issues are reported directly shapes
public understanding and policy discourse, stressing that responsible climate communication is now essential.
The initiative aligns with the Foundation’s broader efforts to promote awareness, behavioural change, and institutional engagement on sustainability.
