Mumbai – Showman Subhash Ghai, the impeccable showman of Indian Hindi Cinema breaks the ice by enquiring about the inspiration for the name of our Website ‘PollywoodBoxoffice.com’. He expresses discontent over the resemblance to Hollywood or Bollywood. He strongly feels that Bollywood has already spoilt its image by imitating Hollywood and he opines that regional Cinemas should preserve their own identity and rich culture. On this note we start the interview:
Q.1: How would you comment on the growth of Indian Cinema since 1960’s?
Undoubtedly, Indian Cinema has grown and gained ‘sensibility’ to a greater extent. There is tremendous improvement in the quality of the Cinema with the influx of digital technology. But, the portrayal of values and virtues has deteriorated. In the bid to emulate western or international culture, most of the characters are shown nuclear or solo (lacking family ties). No doubt, Cinema is the reflection of society but unfortunately, in many cases, in a very stereotypical fashion, it is divulged that only female character or heroines belong to cultured families and heroes are shown as spoilt brats or uncouth men which is an inaccurate depiction.
Q. 2: You have produced, directed and written so many successful movies, among them, which movies you liked the most and why?
My most favourite movies are Karz, Khalnayak, Tal and Black and White; for the simple reason that they are unique and director’s movies. The characters in the movies are larger than the stories.
Q.3: Do you have any plans to make similar type of movies like National Film Award winning movie – `Iqbal’ in near future?
Certainly, we have already made many movies under Mukta Arts Searchlight viz. Rahul, Jogger’s Park and Iqbal. These are all off- beat movies. We have also made Bengali-Hindi mixture ‘Kashmkash’. There are two clear categories of movies ‘commercial’ and ‘niche’ and we have never confused our audience by mixing them.
Q.4: Apart from Hindi cinemas, you have also ventured into Punjabi movies like `Double di Trouble’. What is your experience in Punjabi regional movies and what difference have you observed in Hindi and Punjabi movies?
My first movie in Punjabi was ‘Sherni’(1973) in which I played the lead. Recently, we made the Punjabi movie ‘Double di Trouble’ with Dharmendra ji and it is a huge success. The basic difference between Hindi and Punjabi movies is that Hindi movies reveal national culture and Punjabi movies portray regional culture.
Q.5: You have seen and experienced film industry right from 1950’s, in this journey, what difference have you observed in old and current movies, in terms of actors, directors, producers and writers?
Old movies were story driven and new movies are technology driven. The older generation actors were more theatrical and new generation actors are more real.
Q.6: It has been observed that the children of already established film actors and directors get easy entry and repeated chances even though (many a cases) they are not up to the mark and other talented aspiring actors have to struggle a lot. What is your opinion about it being a successful director?
This is very natural and common phenomenon in every field from politics to business or even in common and regular bureaucratic jobs. Nothing is wrong in that but ultimately, only merit wins in this profession.
Q.7: What is the ‘Success Mantra’ of Bollywood films?
There is only one Success Mantra and that is ‘Janta se jud jaana’ (connect to the people).

Q.8: Why do some big budget movies flop even with hit actor/s and successful movie directors?
The reason why movies fail is that the script writers are not commanding. They cannot justify the character or story.
Q.9: Since you are the student of Film & Television Institute of India (FTII), do you think that the recent FTII’s controversy has affected the quality of training imparted to the students and trainees?

Q.10: How is `Whistling Woods International’ different and special from other Film training institutes ?
Whistling woods International is futuristic. We teach Cinema as well as digital photography, tells Showman Subhash Ghai. We have collaboration with ‘You Tube’. You Tube has partnership with Whistling Woods International in India. Our company has incorporated international sensibility. We have many other future plans.
Q.11: How will your recent business collaboration with German corporation Carl Zeiss and Taiwanese company Foxconn be helpful for film industry?
Showman Subhash Ghai tells, Recent collaboration with German ‘Carl Zeiss’ and Taiwanese ‘Foxconn’ will generate and unleash enormous job opportunities for aspiring artistes and will take Indian Cinema to the new level of digital technology.
